Neverwinter |
History A long time ago an eruption of the closeby "Mount Hotenow" resulted in an earthquake and combination of pyroclastic flow and lava that destroyed much of Neverwinter. A great rift known as the Chasm ripped apart the southeastern quarter of the city, and strange ash zombies and plaguechanged horrors haunted the ruins, released from the plagueland below Neverwinter. Thousands of citizens died during the cataclysm, including the Alagondar royal family, while many others fled to other cities, leaving only a desperate few to carve out an ill existence among the ruins. The remaining Neverwintians were determined to survive in spite of the tragedy, however, and put a brave resistance against the plaguechanged horrors. They eventually built the Wall, using debris and other materials, sacrificing the southeastern quadrant but securing the rest of the city. The Blacklake District endured the cataclysm almost unscathed, and for a time it became the center of the city. Lord Dagult Neverember, seeing an opportunity to add to his financial empire, hired workers to help rebuild the city and guards to protect it from monsters and bandits. Claiming to be a descendant of Neverwinter's former rulers and thus the rightful "Lord Protector" of the city, Dagult started the New Neverwinter movement. Lord Neverember invested a great deal of his own fortune to rebuild the city's infrastructure, buy the interest of merchants to send their caravans again to Neverwinter, and even ensure Neverwintan refugees had enough food and gold in hand. Neverember's efforts to rebuild the city proved successful, and Neverwinter had slowly been restored as a center of civilization in the Sword Coast North. Geography Neverwinter stands on the northern Sword Coast, on the High Road between Waterdeep and Luskan, specifically between Leilon and Port Llast. To the east lies the Neverwinter Wood and, at its heart, the volcanic Mount Hotenow. The Neverwinter River is heated by fire elementals living under the volcano before flowing through the forest and the city. It carries its supernatural warmth with it, keeping the river and harbor from freezing up in winter and the gardens green year-round. The heat given off by the river creates a permanent warm climate in the immediate area. Therefore the name: Neverwinter. Blacklake District: This district lies in the northwest of Neverwinter and the most common folk lives in this district. It holds all kind of workshops like carpenters, smiths, provisions etc. The main Inn in this district is the Beached Leviathan; a more affordable Inn which is a ship that is rebuild like an Inn and tavern that lies in the harbour. Also in this district you will find Neverwinter Castle, where the Lord Protector has its residence. Tower District: This district in the northeast is a very dangerous district and has been taken over by orcs and goblins after the eruption and they are also in charge here. You don't want to come here, they are very hostile and territorial. But also tolerated to keep them happy. The Chasm: This district is still completely destroyed and a large crater splits from north to south through this district. It has been destroyed and looks like a war zone. Only beggars, vagrants and homeless people "live" here. Protectors Enclave: The last but not the least district of Neverwinter lies in the southwest. The rich part of Neverwinter with for example the Palace of Justice where court cases are held. Beautiful homes and large homes like Cepheons you will find in this district. The main inn and tavern in this district is the "Moonstone Mask", a luxurious Inn and therefor expensive. The "Moonstone Mask" is also the place where Deimus lives and spends most of his time in Neverwinter. |
